Hypermobility Home Care

Connective tissue acts similarly to silly putty; it stays firm while used, but stretches out while it rests. This is why if you stay in one position too long, curled up with a good book for example, you can end up more injured than if you are active playing sports. Dynamic posture — moving frequently — avoids this by not fixating on one right posture and instead enjoying a variety of them.

Be aware that some fitness advice that is considered normal will not work for those with hypermobility.

  • Yoga classes that ask you to “lengthen the back of your knee” can lead to hyperextension.
  • “Walking is the simplest exercise” can lead to overlooking supported lunges or other exercises that can strengthen muscles without using so many joints at one time.
