Acupuncture for Hypermobility
Oak Bay Victoria BC
Acupuncture and cupping massage can ease the muscle tension, inflammation and pain associated with hyper-mobile joints.
What is hypermobility?
Our bodies are held together by connective tissues — ligaments and fascia — that hold muscle to bone, nerves and blood vessels in their protected grooves, and organs to the spine or rib cage.
Your flexibility at both a micro and macro level depends in large part on your genetic code for different types of collagen fibres. Like most human traits, this soft tissue flexibility occurs on a spectrum. Thus some people have highly stretchable ligaments and fascia.
This lack of firmness and “hold” in the surrounding soft tissue can result in unstable joints that are more prone to injury. Additionally, muscles surrounding hyper-mobile joints are under constant strain, working overtime to compensate for the lack of stability in the joints. This results in inflammation and pain.
How acupuncture can help with hypermobility
Acupuncture, paired with cupping and massage, helps to improve blood flow to the muscles surrounding hyper-mobile joints. Then metabolic waste products can be circulated away, reducing inflammation and pain.
My bendy joints keep me stuck with tight muscles and chronic pain. Sabrina’s acupuncture is helping me with both of these issues. She listened to my health concerns and accommodated my anxiety about needles. I had a really great experience trying acupuncture. Thank you, Sabrina!

Self Care Tips for Hypermobility
Connective tissue acts similarly to silly putty. It stays firm while used, but stretches out while it rests. This is why if you stay in one position too long, you can end up more injured than if you are active. Dynamic posture avoids this by not fixating on one right posture and instead enjoying a variety of them.
Be aware that some fitness advice that is considered normal will not work for those with hypermobility. Yoga classes that ask you to “lengthen the back of your knee” can lead to hyperextension. “Walking is the simplest exercise” can lead to overlooking supported lunges or other exercises that can strengthen muscles without using so many joints at one time.
